ATLANTA, GEORGIA (July 28, 2025) – One person has tragically died, and 10 people were injured in a mass shooting in the Sweet Auburn neighborhood of Atlanta along Edgewood Avenue.
Fulton County officials are saying that the shooting took place early Monday. Officers received reports of multiple victims with gunshot wounds.
When they arrived at the scene, they located one unresponsive male who was later pronounced deceased. At least 10 other people had gunshot wounds.
Paramedics were called to the scene to help the victims. They were transported to local area hospitals for medical treatment.
A preliminary investigation revealed that three males and one female were involved in some type of dispute that escalated. A full investigation into the shooting along Edgewood Avenue remains ongoing.
Homicides remain an all-too-common occurrence across Atlanta and the United States. According to 11 Alive, “In Georgia, the estimate was 605 in 2019 compared to 943 in 2020, while violent crime increased 23% and assaults shot up 33% over the same time period. Data Atlanta Police sent to the FBI for the report shows homicides in the city increased 62% from 2019 to 2020.” Shootings can often be deterred when certain safety measures are in place.
Property owners in Georgia have a legal obligation to protect guests from reasonably foreseeable sources of harm. This includes sources of harm brought on by the criminal conduct of third parties. When a business has actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition with their premises, they must take action to mitigate harm. For example, if one certain location repeatedly has armed robberies, property owners may need to increase their security to prevent future incidents.
When property owners failed to take reasonable measures to protect guests from shootings and other violent crime, they could be held at fault through civil action. Consider, for example, CVS Pharmacy, LLC v. Carmichael. The Georgia Supreme Court addressed whether or not a business owner could be liable for the criminal conduct of third parties. In this case, the plaintiff was shot during a robbery in a CVS parking lot. He sued CVS, alleging that his injuries were the result of CVS failing to provide adequate security. Ultimately, a jury awarded him $42 million, finding CVS largely responsible. It is important that certain steps are taken after any shooting.
It can be difficult to know where to begin if you’ve been the victim of criminal conduct. Unlike car accidents, there isn’t a clear recovery path through the insurance party of the defendant. However, victims of crime in Georgia may be able to recover through a premises liability claim. Damages can help cover lost wages and medical bills.
