Local Authorities Working to Determine the Source of Deadly Fire at Camilla-Based Tyson Foods Poultry Plant

CAMILLA, GEORGIA (December 30, 2024) – One person has tragically died, and several others were injured in an overnight fire at the Tyson Foods poultry plant in Camilla.
The fire started on Friday night. A wall fell on the cab of an 18-wheeler parked outside the plant.
That impact killed a truck driver who was sleeping outside. It remains unclear if this accident was in any way connected to the fire.
Within the plant, a boiler exploded and appears to be the initial source of the fire. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victims and put out the fire.
The fire burned for around three hours before being put out. Multiple people were injured and taken to the hospital.
Liability for Fires at Commercial Facilities
Fires remain one of the leading causes of preventable injury and death in the United States. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, “The 2022 national estimates for nonresidential building fires and losses show that there were: 129,500 fires. 140 deaths. 1,300 injuries.” OSHA estimates that roughly 5,000 people are injured in workplace fires every year. There are a number of measures that food plant facilities should take in order to prevent fires.
- Equipment in the plant should be regularly inspected and cleaned.
- Dust filters in the facility should be regularly cleaned.
- The plant should utilize fire-resistant material on the walls, ceilings, and other high-risk areas.
- Flammable materials and liquids should be stored only in designated areas.

There is no need for a worker to demonstrate negligence in order to receive benefits through this system. An injured worker may also have recourse through a third-party liability claim. A third-party liability claim may be possible if an entity separate from a worker’s employer contributed to an accident. There might be numerous sources of third-party liability for a Georgia plant fire.
- The company that manufactured some piece of equipment related to a fire could be liable if it malfunctioned.
- Contractors could be liable for a fire if they failed to properly maintain equipment that started a fire.
- Utility companies could be liable for a fire if it was caused by improperly maintained gas or electrical lines.
It can be hard to know where to begin after being injured on the job. Victims are often left with catastrophic injuries and may need to take extensive periods of time away from work. Many people are so seriously injured that they may never be able to return to their previous professions. It is important for workers to understand that they do have rights.
