CAMILLA, GEORGIA (December 30, 2024) – One person has tragically died, and several others were injured in an overnight fire at the Tyson Foods poultry plant in Camilla.
The fire started on Friday night. A wall fell on the cab of an 18-wheeler parked outside the plant.
That impact killed a truck driver who was sleeping outside. It remains unclear if this accident was in any way connected to the fire.
Within the plant, a boiler exploded and appears to be the initial source of the fire. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victims and put out the fire.
The fire burned for around three hours before being put out. Multiple people were injured and taken to the hospital.
Fires remain one of the leading causes of preventable injury and death in the United States. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, “The 2022 national estimates for nonresidential building fires and losses show that there were: 129,500 fires. 140 deaths. 1,300 injuries.” OSHA estimates that roughly 5,000 people are injured in workplace fires every year. There are a number of measures that food plant facilities should take in order to prevent fires.
