Baldwin County officials are saying that the accident took place around Tuesday night. A 16-year-old driver was operating a pickup truck and turning onto Harvey Road from GA 49 West.
A mail truck hit the pickup truck, thereby causing it to overturn. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the victim.
The driver was taken to a trauma center in Macon to receive treatment for major injuries. A full investigation into the cause of the accident remains ongoing at this time.
Truck drivers must use caution to avoid colliding with other vehicles in the roadway. To that end, they must travel at a safe speed at all times. Pursuant to GA Code § 40-6-180, “No person shall drive a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions and having regard for the actual and potential hazards then existing.” Truck companies should take several actions to help prevent collisions.
If a truck driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with another vehicle, this may be construed as negligence. The company that any mail truck driver was working for could also be held at fault. Generally speaking, companies can be held liable for the wrongful conduct of their workers who were operating within the course and scope of their job duties. This could include instances where a truck driver was delivering mail or packages.
Many people are seriously injured in accidents with commercial trucks each year. According to the IIHS, “The main problem is the vulnerability of people traveling in smaller vehicles. Trucks often weigh 20-30 times as much as passenger cars and are taller with greater ground clearance, which can result in smaller vehicles underriding trucks in crashes.” It is important that certain actions are taken after any truck accident.
