Truck Driver Killed In Candler County Truck Accident on I-16CANDLER COUNTY, GEORGIA (June 12, 2025) – A truck driver has tragically died following a Candler County semi-truck accident near the emergency lane of Interstate 16.

Candler County officials are saying that the accident took place on Friday. A tractor-trailer was merging into the right interstate lane when it was struck by another tractor trailer.

The force of the impact caused extensive damage to both vehicles. Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim.

Sadly, the driver of the second tractor trailer was beyond medical aid and pronounced dead at the scene. Traffic was closed on the westbound lanes of Interstate 16 for several hours as authorities continued their investigation.

A full investigation into the crash remains ongoing.

Liability for Candler County Semi-Truck Accidents

Driving a truck is one of the most demanding and sometimes dangerous occupations. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Multiple traumatic injuries and disorders was the most common nature of fatal occupational injuries to truck drivers in 2018. The incidence rate of nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses involving days away from work was 262.1 cases per 10,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers among heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers and 233.0 cases per 10,000 FTE workers among light truck or delivery services drivers in 2018.” Truck companies should take several measures to prevent collisions.

  • Compliance: Truck companies should ensure that all of their drivers have a commercial license and are in good standing.
  • Breaks: Truck companies should ensure that their drivers are taking periodic breaks and following all hours of operation requirements.
  • Maintenance: Truck companies should ensure that their vehicles are periodically inspected and well maintained.

Truck drivers have a legal obligation to operate with an abundance of caution in order to avoid collisions. They must take into consideration the stopping distance specific to their vehicle. Many truck accidents involve truck drivers that make unsafe lane changes. Pursuant to O.C.G.A. § 40-6-48(a), a vehicle shall be driven within a single lane of traffic and shall not be moved from that lane until the driver has first determined that they can change lanes safely. If a truck driver makes an unsafe lane merge into the path of another vehicle, they could be held at fault through a civil claim.

It is critical that evidence be properly preserved after any truck accident. These accidents usually involve safety violations. In particular, a carrier may have pushed a truck driver to complete their deliveries on an unrealistic time schedule. Fatigue often plays a critical role in semi-truck crashes. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that staying awake for only 17 hours can reduce a person’s ability to drive safely equal to driving with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.05%. Every truck accident should be thoroughly investigated.

  • Truck drivers are required to log all of their hours in a logbook. It is important to determine if there may have been any violations in this area.
  • The physical condition of the truck involved in any collision should be reviewed.
  • The safety record of any truck company involved in a collision should be determined.

Though trucks account for a relatively small number of the total vehicles on the roadway, they are involved in a disproportionately high number of fatal collisions. For that reason, truck companies should always do everything in their power to prioritize safety. But in far too many situations, cost-cutting measures interfere with safety standards. The family of any person killed in a semi-truck accident may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a wrongful death claim.
