Liability For Albany Dog Attacks
Thousands of people are seriously injured every year in preventable dog attacks. Tragically, many people are so seriously injured that they die. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “During 2011–2021, a total of 468 deaths from being bitten or struck by a dog occurred (average = 43 deaths per year). The annual number of deaths ranged from 31 (2016) to 81 (2021). During 2011–2016, more deaths occurred among males than among females during most years; however, during 2017–2021, more deaths occurred among females than among males.” Dog owners should take a number of measures in order to avoid dog attacks.
- Dog owners should socialize their dogs from a young age.
- Dog owners should typically refrain from engaging in aggressive play.
- Dog owners should have their dogs on a leash unless they are in designated off-leash areas.
- Dog owners should ensure their dogs are properly secured within their home or yard.
A dog owner could be liable in Georgia if their dog injures someone. Pursuant to GA Code § 51-2-7, a person who owns or keeps a dangerous animal of any kind and, by careless management of their animal, causes another person to be injured may be liable for damages. Liability will typically follow, provided that the person attacked was not provoking the animal in some way. Victims of dog attacks tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries.
- Lacerations

It can be hard to know where to begin after any dog attack. Victims often suffer life-altering injuries. These injuries can leave them with extensive medical bills and may impact a person’s ability to work. Sadly, though, dog owners and their insurance providers will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility if their dog attacks someone. This is why it is so important for victims to seek legal guidance as early as possible.
