â–ºTom: So, what was your case about?
â–ºJeb: Thanks, Tom. Our case, Jackson against Clemens, was in the Superior Court of Muskogee County, that’s Columbus, Georgia. It was a sexual assault, sexual abuse, and rape case involving a young woman who had been sexually abused by her preacher, her pastor, starting when she was 15 years old and continuing until she was about 24. So from 2002 to 2010, roughly. You wanna add to it?
â–ºMorgan: No, I mean, I think you hit it all. I guess I will add, you know, it wasn’t forcible. It wasn’t you know, something like that, but it was under the power of mental coercion. He used the Bible to try to justify the things he was doing to these women and specifically to our client. And he did so successfully for that time period that Jeb talked about from 15 to 24, which a long time. It’s an entire adolescence, so…
â–ºJeb: Yeah. Right. So that’s a good point. Is sexual abuse can come from mental coercion directly when someone’s young. We found that this particular pastor had sort of a pattern. He had this church that consisted largely…at least to a large extent, of people from really tough backgrounds. Some young girls from tough backgrounds. And he would kind of take them in, get them integrated in the community, give them a position in the church, and then start kind of a series. Like he had a plan, sort of a pattern, that we found with a lot of the young women that he would eventually gain control over and really take advantage of them for years. Morgan might can tell you about that pattern.
â–ºMorgan: Yeah. So, you know, it started out like Jeb said. He’d get them involved in the church. Oftentimes would give them some sort of title or employ them, whether or not, you know, they were getting paid is one thing. But they all had some sort of title with the church that made them feel important and made them feel tied to him and the church. And then he would start slowly asking them for things that were inappropriate, kisses on the cheeks that would progress to kisses on the lips. And when some of the girls would protest, he’d deflect and say it was fatherly. And many of them pointed out that they never kissed their fathers on their lips and that wasn’t something they did, but it’s the pastor of a church. And, you know, you gonna go along with it. You know, after the kisses, it progressed to more touching. He’d first asked them to touch him, then sometimes would ask if he could touch them.
â–ºJeb: And what particular part of him did he ask all of them to touch?
â–ºMorgan: His nipples. Unfortunately, he has a very odd infatuation with his nipples and asked pretty much every victim we found to do that. So that was a very consistent thing that made their stories very believable and authentic because, you know, one person says it was five, so a big deal so… Then it would progress unfortunately with our client, it progressed to sex. And he raped her from the age of 15 till she was 24 weekly, sometimes one or two times a week, all over the state, drive her places, keeping her in hotels, that kind of thing. You know, it was definitely a bad situation.
â–ºJeb: Yeah.
â–ºTom: So how did you prepare your client and the other victims to testify at trial? I mean, it must’ve been difficult for them.
â–ºJeb: Yeah, well, it was. We tried this case recently, you know. A lot of cases settle, particularly sexual assault cases, but this one, our client wanted to go to trial and we did. So she really did… Our client was a part of this tight community that was around the church.
